Walking into a vape shop should feel like getting advice, not being talked into a hobby you didn't ask for. But UK shops vary. One assistant will ask about your smoking, your budget and your goal. Another will point at the biggest mod on the shelf and say 'everyone loves this one'.
You don't need to know the difference between a coil and a pod to ask a good question. You just need a short list and a bit of nerve. Here are 12 questions to keep the conversation on your terms.
Why a script helps
A script isn't about being difficult. It's about not leaving with a 100W kit when you wanted a simple pod, or a 20mg liquid when you were looking to step down. The right setup should match your goal: stopping cigarettes, cutting nicotine, or just finding a safer alternative that you'll actually stick with.
The 12 questions
- What nicotine strength fits my smoking habit and my goal? Tell them how much you smoke and when you reach for a cigarette. A heavy smoker may need a higher strength to start; a lighter smoker may not. The legal maximum is 20mg/ml, but that does not mean it's the right starting point for everyone.
- Is this device and packaging UK-compliant? Ask to see the box. You're looking for a 2ml pod or tank limit, no more than 20mg/ml nicotine, an ingredient list, a nicotine warning, and producer details. 'MHRA notified' is not the same as 'MHRA approved'.
- Is it reusable, and what exactly do I replace? After the single-use vape ban, this matters. A legal kit should be rechargeable or refillable, with replacement pods, coils or liquid. If it's sealed and binned when empty, it shouldn't be sold.
- Will this coil or pod work with the liquid I want? Not every liquid suits every device. High-VG liquid in a tiny pod can leak or burn. Ask about the VG/PG ratio and the coil resistance before you buy a big bottle.
- What wattage should I use, and does the device set it? Simple pods often do the thinking for you. Adjustable mods can be great, but they can also be a fast route to a burnt coil. Ask for a starting wattage and write it down.
- How much will the first month cost, all in? Device, spare pods or coils, liquid, and a charger if you need one. A cheap kit with expensive pods is not cheap. A pricier kit with cheap coils might be.
- Can I get a lower-strength option in the same device? If you're planning to cut down, ask now. Some devices are better suited to higher strengths, some to lower. You don't want to buy a setup that locks you into one level.
- What's the throat hit like, and can I change it? Throat hit comes from nicotine and PG, not just flavour. If you want a cigarette-like feel, say so. If you want smooth, say that too.
- How will I know when to step down? A good shop will have a rough answer: fewer cravings, vaping less, feeling ready. A bad one will look confused. This is your nicotine reduction plan, not theirs.
- What's the returns policy and warranty? UK consumer rights apply. Ask what happens if the device is faulty out of the box, and keep your receipt. A shop that gets shifty about receipts is a shop to leave.
- Do I actually need an upgrade, or is a simple kit enough? This is the question that saves money. If you're quitting cigarettes, simple is often better. If you're a hobbyist, fine — but don't let someone sell you a hobby you didn't ask for.
- Can you show me the simplest setup that meets my goal? End with this. It resets the conversation from 'biggest cloud' to 'right tool'. If they can't answer it, try somewhere else.
Pushy tactics to notice
You don't need to be cynical, just awake. Watch for 'you'll grow into it' when you've asked for something simple. Watch for 'everyone starts at 20mg' when you've said you're a light smoker. Watch for huge puff counts on disposable-style boxes, bundles with coils you'll never use, and claims that any vape is 'totally safe'. No vape is risk-free, even if it's much safer than smoking.
Also notice what they don't ask. If nobody asks how much you smoke, how long you've smoked, or what you want to achieve, you're being sold to, not advised.
Leave with a plan
Ask for the receipt. Start on the lower wattage. Buy one liquid before you buy five. Check the age policy — if a shop doesn't check ID, that's a bad sign. And if the answers feel vague, walk. A good vape shop will be glad you asked.
The best setup is not the biggest one. It's the one that helps you stop smoking and doesn't make you feel like you need a manual to use it.
